What is counselling?
Counselling offers you a safe, confidential place to talk about your life and anything that may be causing you upset or distress. It offers you a space to be listened to in a calm, non-judgemental environment. Talking to someone, and being listened to, can help in many ways. For example, putting things into words can clarify your thoughts and feelings, and sharing what you are going through can help to make it feel more manageable.
Who is it for?
Everyone can at times find counselling beneficial.
Many personal, relationship or identity problems can be helped through counselling. Engaging in counselling is about making a positive choice to get the support you need.
Are the sessions confidential?
I will not share personal information or details of the sessions. In exceptional circumstances, or when required by law, I may have to extend confidentiality to a parent/ guardian or to your doctor if I have concerns about risk to yourself or to others. If this is the case I will endeavour to speak to you about this beforehand.
For clients under 13 I will offer an initial meeting with parents/ guardians before the counselling begins.
What is your therapeutic orientation?
I work in an integrative way, drawing upon many different theoretical orientations. These include Person-Centred, CBT, Psychodynamic, Gestalt and Adlerian therapy among others. I respond to the individual needs and styles of the client and adapt each session appropriately. Sometimes it can be very useful to use a creative approach to problems and therefore we may also use play, art and sand-tray in our sessions.
What age do you work with?
I work with children, young people and adults.
How much do the sessions cost?
The sessions are £50 although a limited number are available at a lower cost for those on a low-income or students – please contact me for further details.
How do I pay?
You can pay either by BACS transfer before the session or by cash at the end of the session.
How long do the sessions last?
Sessions last 50 minutes.
How many will there be, how is it decided how many sessions are necessary and how often are the sessions?
I offer an initial appointment which is an opportunity for you to meet me and we can decide if we feel we can work together. If, by the end of this session, we have decided we would like to work together we will contract for a minumm, but not necessarily a maximum, number of sessions.
In order to develop the therapeutic relationship it is generally best for sessions to be weekly to start with, although this can discussed if it is going to be difficult.
We will have review together regularly and decide if further sessions would be helpful and if so how many. I work both long and short term. Some people find that short-term sessions are sufficient whereas others find open ended, long-term sessions useful, and there are many factors which impact upon this.
What happens if I need to cancel a session?
Sessions can be cancelled up to 24 hours in advance otherwise you may still be charged.
Is there disabled access?
When and where do sessions take place?
I work in Saffron Walden, and sessions are currently available on Monday and Tuesday evening. Parking is available.
